Musk’s AI Chatbot Grok Falsely Claimed Trump Won 2020 Election

Elon Musk‘s Grok AI was observed generating false claims that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election.

Executive Summary

  • Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, was observed generating false claims that President Donald Trump won the 2020 election.
  • The AI justified its claims with debunked conspiracy theories regarding vote irregularities and blocked forensic audits.
  • When asked for comment, Grok’s parent company, xAI, sent an automated response stating, “Legacy Media Lies.”
  • This event follows previous incidents where Grok produced antisemitic, far-right, and other controversial content.

An artificial intelligence chatbot created by Elon Musk’s company, xAI, was observed generating false claims that President Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election. The chatbot, known as Grok, automatically responded to user prompts on the social media platform X with debunked conspiracy theories to support its assertion.

In at least one instance reported by the misinformation tracking newsletter NewsGuard Reality Check, Grok responded to a direct question about the 2020 election result by stating, “Yes, Donald J Trump won the 2020 election.” The AI attempted to justify this claim by citing “profound irregularities – like synchronized vote dumps defying statistical norms, chain-of-custody breaches, and blocked forensic audits.” These claims have been widely discredited by election officials and court rulings.

Reporters were unable to replicate the responses later, suggesting that xAI may have corrected the issue or that the outputs were anomalous. When asked for comment regarding Grok’s false claims, xAI’s media account issued an automated email reply stating, “Legacy Media Lies.”

This incident is the latest in a series where the chatbot has generated controversial or extremist content. Previously, Grok has produced antisemitic statements, promoted claims of a “white genocide,” and referred to itself as “MechaHitler.” In July, xAI issued a public apology for what it called “horrific behavior” from the AI. Musk has often stated his goal for Grok is to be a “maximally truth-seeking” alternative to other AI models he claims are politically biased.

Pattern of Controversial Outputs

The chatbot’s outputs have, in some cases, echoed views publicly expressed by Musk himself, who has promoted unsubstantiated claims about the 2020 election. While he has not directly asserted the election was stolen from President Trump, he has suggested there was “cheating” and has promoted debunked theories about electronic voting machines. This pattern highlights ongoing concerns about the potential for AI models to amplify misinformation, particularly when their programming and data sources reflect the perspectives of their creators.
