HENDERSON, Nev. – Nevada State University’s Henderson campus lifted a shelter-in-place order on Wednesday afternoon after a police pursuit of a carjacking suspect ended near the university, leading to an arrest. The university confirmed that the campus was cleared and that there was no longer a threat to students or staff.
The university issued the initial alert around 3:03 p.m., advising individuals to shelter in place due to a significant police presence near several campus buildings, including the Kasner Academic Building and the Village student housing complex. A university spokesperson stated the alert was issued “out of an abundance of caution” on the advice of University Police Services.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), the lead agency in the operation, reported that the incident began with a carjacking in Laughlin at approximately 1:50 p.m. An LVMPD Air Unit tracked the stolen vehicle until the suspect abandoned it near US 95/I-11 and Wagon Wheel Drive, in close proximity to the NSU campus.
By 3:43 p.m., LVMPD, with support from Henderson Police, had contained the situation. The university later confirmed the suspect had been apprehended. In a subsequent statement, NSU announced, “Police have cleared all NSU facilities. Resume normal activities.” It is important to note that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
