New LGBTQ+ Clinic Opens in Broward County

A new medical clinic in Broward County is catering to the healthcare needs of LGBTQ+ patients, a community that often feels misunderstood and marginalized.

Located at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, this initiative aims to provide specialized healthcare services exclusively for the LGBTQ+ community. Dr. Patrick McLendon, the clinic’s lead provider, expressed that the clinic was established to address the historical underrepresentation and inadequate healthcare service received by this community. According to Dr. McLendon, the objective is to offer care that is sensitive to cultural and individual needs, ensuring that patients feel understood and respected.

Christian Trent, a healthcare professional and patient, emphasized the importance of having healthcare providers who comprehend the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. He mentioned his difficulty in connecting with previous doctors and expressed optimism about this new clinic filling a much-needed gap in healthcare services.

Statistics from a 2024 American Cancer Society report indicate that LGBTQ+ individuals are at a higher risk for certain health issues, including cancer, due to higher rates of smoking, obesity, and alcohol consumption. This underscores the need for preventative healthcare and screenings, which are often avoided due to stigma and fear of discrimination. The new clinic aims to close these gaps by promoting a welcoming and understanding environment for all patients.

Dr. McLendon, who is also a member of the LGBTQ+ community, remarked on the personal and professional significance of representing this community within a healthcare setting. He believes that having representation in such environments fosters authenticity and healing, both for practitioners and patients.

Operating hours for the LGBTQ+ Clinic are Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital. The clinic is located at 3100 Weston Road, Weston, FL 33331. Appointments can be made at 954-659-5440 or through the Cleveland Clinic’s website, searching for a provider specializing in LGBTQ+ Health.

The establishment of the new LGBTQ+ clinic in Broward County marks a significant step towards inclusive and representative healthcare. By addressing the unique needs of LGBTQ+ patients, the clinic not only fills a critical gap in the healthcare system but also promotes a sense of understanding and trust between patients and providers.
