New Orleans Suspect Visited Tampa Before Deadly Incident

In a development that raises questions, the FBI reports that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect in the New Orleans New Year’s Eve attack, was in Tampa two months prior to the tragic event where 15 people lost their lives.

Authorities are investigating the timeline of Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect behind a deadly attack in New Orleans. According to FBI agents, Jabbar visited Tampa for unspecified reasons between October 26 and 28, roughly 65 days before carrying out the New Year’s Eve attack that resulted in 15 fatalities. The FBI is appealing to the public for information that could shed light on Jabbar’s activities and intentions during his Florida visit.

Former Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan speculated on possible reasons for Jabbar’s trip, noting, “Maybe he was going to Busch Gardens. I don’t say that sarcastically. Maybe he was here to meet up with someone. Maybe he was using this as a place to evaluate whether Tampa was a target?” The FBI has remained silent on how they tracked Jabbar’s movements within the city, underlining the urgency of their inquiries.

Tampa’s exposure to terrorism is not unprecedented. The city has witnessed several incidents, including a 2020 case involving a Temple Terrace officer attacked by a woman linked to an individual accused of supporting ISIS. Both Jabbar and this individual reportedly shared sympathies with the same terrorist organization.

Former FBI Special Agent Lisa Burns voiced confidence in the agency’s ability to unravel Jabbar’s reasons for his Tampa visit using digital evidence. “I feel fairly confident that they will be able to put that picture together,” Burns commented, suggesting that Jabbar may not have been a savvy operator as his attack methods were quite rudimentary.

Bay Area legal analyst Anthony Rickman emphasized the importance of retracing Jabbar’s movements, remarking, “He’s been killed, and dead men tell no tales. In this particular case, law enforcement has to retrace his steps everywhere he went to determine if there is anyone else involved in this case.”

Jabbar’s travels included trips to Egypt and Canada before the attack, adding layers to the FBI’s investigation. The bureau has established a platform for people to confidentially provide tips and upload evidence potentially related to the case.

The mystery surrounding Shamsud-Din Jabbar’s visit to Tampa continues to perplex investigators. With his death, the burden lies on the FBI and public cooperation to piece together the puzzle of his motivations and connections.
