Paul DeSousa, a sergeant from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, found himself in an unforeseen rescue mission while on vacation with his family. The serene atmosphere of Dollywood was interrupted by cries for help, drawing DeSousa’s attention to a distressing scene.
A young child, approximately three or four years old, had stopped breathing. A park employee was attempting the Heimlich maneuver, but the situation appeared dire. Recognizing the severity of the child’s condition, Sgt. DeSousa sprang into action.
He assessed the child’s condition, noting that there was no visible obstruction in the mouth or throat, yet the child was not breathing and his skin had turned blue. Without hesitation, DeSousa began administering CPR to the young boy.
Soon, a paramedic also on vacation joined DeSousa in aiding the child. Together, they worked tirelessly to revive him. Their efforts were rewarded when the child’s breathing resumed, and color returned to his face.
The quick and decisive actions of Sgt. DeSousa and the vacationing paramedic played a crucial role in stabilizing the young boy until emergency medical services arrived.
