A dramatic incident unfolded on a Saturday morning in Fort Lauderdale when a man attempting to escape police found himself in need of their assistance after jumping into a canal.
The event took place around 9:25 a.m. on Northeast 62 Street, also known as Cypress Creek Road. According to Casey Liening, a spokesperson for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, officers noticed a man appearing to wear a bulletproof vest and attempted to make contact with him. However, the man refused to comply, prompting a brief foot chase.
The pursuit led the man to a nearby canal, where he entered the water and declined to surrender to the officers. To address the situation, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s Dive Team was called in to help. Fortunately, they were able to rescue the man from the canal safely. Following his rescue, the man was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure, according to police sources.
Investigators suspect the man might have been armed during the incident. Before reaching the canal, he allegedly handed a firearm to a female accomplice. This woman was detained by the police and issued a Notice to Appear.
The police activity was notably present outside The Westin Fort Lauderdale at Northeast Seventh Avenue, also referred to as Corporate Drive. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information regarding this incident to contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477, offering anonymity to those who provide tips.
This unusual series of events highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in apprehending suspects while ensuring their safety. As investigations continue, police remain vigilant in their efforts to gather more details from the public.
