President Donald Trump on Tuesday provided his most detailed account to date for his falling out with the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, stating that Epstein was banned from the Mar-a-Lago club for “stealing” female employees from the spa. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, President Trump for the first time identified one of these women as Virginia Giuffre, who is one of the most prominent public accusers in Epstein’s long-running sex trafficking operation. This new explanation adds a significant layer to a relationship that has drawn intense scrutiny and become a political vulnerability for the president.

An Evolving Explanation

The comments made while returning from Scotland represent a marked evolution in President Trump’s public statements on the matter. “I was not happy with him,” President Trump said, explaining that Epstein was “taking people who worked for me.” He described the women as being “taken out of the spa, hired by him — in other words, gone.”

President Trump said he issued a warning to Epstein after the first incident. “I said, listen, we don’t want you taking our people,” he recounted. When the behavior allegedly occurred again, President Trump stated that he permanently barred Epstein from the private Florida club, a move he claims happened nearly two decades ago.

These remarks build upon a statement from the previous day, where President Trump first claimed he banned Epstein for having “stole people that worked for me.” However, in those initial comments, he did not specify that the employees were young women from the spa, nor did he name any of the individuals involved.

The Significance of Naming Virginia Giuffre

By explicitly naming Virginia Giuffre, President Trump has placed a central figure of the Epstein scandal directly at his property. This acknowledgment is critical because of Giuffre’s high-profile role in exposing Epstein’s crimes.

Who is Virginia Giuffre?

Virginia Giuffre has publicly alleged for years that she was recruited by Epstein as a teenager and was subsequently trafficked and sexually abused by Epstein and his powerful associates. Her detailed and persistent accusations have been instrumental in legal proceedings and journalistic investigations that brought down the financier.

Implications of the Acknowledgment

President Trump’s statement serves a dual purpose. On one hand, it provides a concrete and serious justification for severing ties with Epstein, framing the action as a protective measure for his staff. On the other hand, it confirms that a known victim of Epstein’s trafficking ring was employed at his club, raising further questions about the environment at Mar-a-Lago during that period and what management knew of Epstein’s activities.

A Complicated History

The effort to distance himself from Epstein stands in contrast to President Trump’s past remarks about the financier. The two men were known to socialize in the same elite circles in New York and Palm Beach throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Their association has been a recurring issue for President Trump, particularly since Epstein’s 2019 arrest on federal sex trafficking charges.

Critics often point to a 2002 magazine interview in which President Trump described Epstein as a “terrific guy.” He was quoted as saying Epstein was “a lot of fun to be with” and that “he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.” This previous praise makes the current narrative of a decisive falling-out a key point of political contention.

Political Pressure and Transparency

The new details emerge amid growing pressure on the Trump administration to be more transparent about the Epstein case. Following Epstein’s death in a federal jail cell, which was ruled a suicide, calls intensified from the public and politicians on both sides of the aisle for the release of all records related to his crimes and his network of powerful associates.

The administration has faced criticism for what some perceive as a reluctance to declassify or release documents that could shed more light on the case. This has created a rare point of friction with some of President Trump’s supporters, who expect him to pursue accountability regardless of who is implicated.

President Trump’s latest remarks appear to be a direct attempt to control the narrative surrounding his past association with Epstein. By offering a specific reason for their estrangement that involves protecting his employees, he aims to counter the portrayal of a long and friendly relationship. However, by invoking the name of a key victim, he has also ensured the story will remain a subject of intense public and political focus.
