KANANASKIS, ALBERTA – President Donald Trump will cut short his attendance at the G-7 summit in Canada, departing for Washington on Monday evening to deal with what the White House described as “important matters,” including the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

The surprise announcement came from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who confirmed the President’s early return from Kananaskis, Alberta. The departure means President Trump will miss the final day of the summit, which was scheduled to conclude on Tuesday.

Before the decision to leave, the President held a face-to-face meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, where the two leaders agreed to pursue a bilateral trade deal within the next 30 days. President Trump also signed a separate trade agreement with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer focused on car and aerospace tariffs.

The summit was marked by tense discussions on global trade, as world leaders pushed President Trump to de-escalate his tariff-heavy policies. Despite these calls, the President held firm, describing himself as a “tariff person.”

The volatile situation between Israel and Iran was a primary topic of discussion. While a draft G-7 statement calling for de-escalation in the region was circulated, sources indicate President Trump is not expected to sign it. In comments to reporters, he urged Iran to “talk immediately, before it’s too late.”

The President also weighed in on the war in Ukraine, suggesting European nations should take the lead on any further sanctions against Russia.
