Mack Proctor, a murder victim from 1972 whose case remained unsolved for over five decades, was finally laid to rest with dignity in Polk County.
For 52 years, the identity of Mack Proctor and the circumstances surrounding his death had eluded investigators in Polk County. Proctor was brutally murdered on May 17, 1972, in the area of Eloise. With no substantial evidence at the time to charge the suspects, Clarence Ingram and Edgar Todd—who had reportedly confessed to the crime—the case went cold. Proctor’s name remained unknown, and tragically, his family never reported him missing.
The situation changed with advancements in forensic genealogy, a breakthrough that Polk County detectives used to identify Proctor and the suspects involved in his murder. Despite both suspects being deceased, the case was finally solved, and Proctor’s story emerged from oblivion.
In recognition of the closure provided to this haunting cold case, Mack Proctor was given a proper burial on a somber Tuesday morning at Lakeside Memorial Garden in Winter Haven. The funeral was organized by the sheriff’s office alongside Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home, ensuring Proctor was no longer confined to a nameless grave.
Eric Holm, the Chaplain, emphasized the significance of recognizing Proctor as an individual with a known identity: ‘We gather to lay to rest Mr. Mack Proctor, not as an unknown victim, but as someone who was always known to the creator.’ Similarly, Sheriff Grady Judd captured the moment’s poignancy, stating that such cases highlight the resolve of detectives who persist in seeking justice: ‘It’s good for their heart and soul to see that we’re able to reunite our victim with his family, if not any other way but memory alone.’
Proctor’s son, now 77 years old and living in Georgia, was unable to attend due to illness but expressed deep gratitude toward the detectives involved. The sheriff mentioned that the family sent gifts to the team, acknowledging their relentless pursuit of justice. The ceremony stands as a beacon of hope for the families of other cold case victims, showcasing the dedication of law enforcement and the power of modern science in unraveling longstanding mysteries.
The proper burial of Mack Proctor, after being unidentified for so long, underscores the potential of forensic advancements to bring peace and resolution to long-standing cold cases, offering solace to families yearning for closure.
