PORTERVILLE, CA – A police pursuit of a stolen vehicle in Porterville late Sunday night ended in a fiery crash that left one suspect dead, another seriously injured, and a Tulare County Sheriff’s deputy with moderate injuries, according to authorities. The incident occurred when the suspect vehicle collided with a patrol car and subsequently burst into flames in a residential yard.
The events began shortly before midnight when Porterville Police officers were assisting the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) in locating a reported stolen vehicle. According to a police statement, the driver failed to yield, initiating a pursuit. During the chase, the suspect intentionally rammed a TCSO deputy’s patrol vehicle before fleeing into a residential area.
A short time later, a Porterville Police officer spotted the vehicle traveling at high speed and attempted another traffic stop. The suspect again refused to stop and, upon entering the intersection of Westfield Avenue and Prospect Street, collided with a second TCSO deputy’s vehicle. The impact sent the suspect’s car into the yard of a nearby home, where it caught fire.
The suspect vehicle contained two occupants. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was transported to a local hospital with major injuries. The deputy involved in the collision also required hospitalization for moderate injuries. The first deputy whose vehicle was rammed was not injured.
The intersection was closed for several hours as the Porterville Police Department investigated the scene. Authorities have not yet determined if drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The investigation remains active.
