It’s crucial to plug space heaters directly into wall outlets instead of using extension cords, which are linked to approximately 3,300 house fires annually, resulting in 50 fatalities and 270 injuries. Kreie stressed the importance of keeping space heaters away from flammable materials, such as drapes and blankets.
In addition to personal warmth, protecting plants from the cold is essential. Kreie explained the risks of cold damage to plants, likening it to a ‘freezer burn’ that could destroy leaves. He suggested using frost blankets to shield plants from the harsh air, recommending that these coverings be elevated to prevent direct contact with plant leaves.
