San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 24-year-old man on Saturday morning following a chaotic sequence of events involving a stabbing and a subsequent carjacking in Pescadero, California. The suspect, identified as Arsenio Gonzalez of Redwood City, was taken into custody after a search that prompted a shelter-in-place order for local residents.
According to a departmental statement, deputies responded to reports of a stabbing near Bean Hollow Road and Pescadero Creek Road at approximately 1 a.m. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a male victim suffering from what were described as "serious" injuries. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in stable condition.
Investigators learned that a group of known individuals had driven to the coast when a disturbance broke out inside the vehicle. "A witness told deputies that during the disturbance, the suspect stabbed the victim, before fleeing the area on foot," the Sheriff’s Office stated. Deputies established a perimeter but were initially unable to locate the suspect in the immediate aftermath.
During the search, authorities received a report of a carjacking nearby. Deputies quickly located the stolen vehicle, but the suspect fled from the car into a heavily wooded area. In response, the Sheriff’s Office issued a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding community while the search continued. Gonzalez was eventually located and arrested at approximately 10:15 a.m.
Gonzalez was booked into jail on suspicion of attempted homicide, carjacking, resisting arrest, and possessing drug paraphernalia. It is important to note that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Public Safety Resolution
The apprehension of the suspect brings a resolution to a violent episode that temporarily disrupted the Pescadero community. The lifting of the shelter-in-place order indicates that law enforcement no longer perceives an immediate threat to residents in the area. As the case moves to the judicial phase, prosecutors will likely focus on the sequence of events connecting the initial assault to the subsequent flight and carjacking.
