Residents of Sweetwater Mobile Park File Class Action Lawsuit

Nearly 200 residents of Li’l Abner Mobile Home Park in Sweetwater have joined a class action lawsuit against the city of Sweetwater and Miami-Dade County, fighting to stay in their homes.

In November, a notice was issued to 900 mobile homeowners notifying them of the planned closure of Li’l Abner Mobile Home Park, effective May 19 next year. The property is slated for conversion into affordable government-subsidized housing. This decision has sparked a legal battle, as residents argue against the eviction plans.

A key figure in this unfolding story is Miguel Gonzalez, a resident who recently moved to the park. ‘This situation is very complex,’ he stated, highlighting the challenges faced by his family, who relocated from New York seeking a better life in Florida. The sudden eviction notice they received shortly after moving in has been particularly disheartening for them.

The lawsuit claims that the landlord failed to comply with legal requirements, including not providing proper notice to the homeowners association and violating the law regarding rent increases. Florida law stipulates that rent cannot be increased 90 days prior to an eviction notice, a rule the lawsuit alleges was not followed.

Additionally, the lawsuit accuses the city and county of failing to conduct necessary studies to ensure that displaced residents have alternative housing options. Gonzalez expressed his frustration, describing the actions of the owner and local authorities as ‘unfair.’

The situation is further complicated by the ongoing relocation efforts. According to reports, 117 tenants have already moved, and others plan to relocate, partly due to financial incentives offered for a swift departure. Sweetwater Mayor Jose ‘Pepe’ Diaz assured residents that efforts are being made to provide resources and support during this difficult transition.

Despite these promises, the tension between residents and the authorities remains high. The management of the mobile home park maintains that all decisions were made in compliance with local regulations, but the residents continue their fight for justice through the legal system.

The residents of Li’l Abner Mobile Home Park remain steadfast in their legal battle against eviction. As they navigate this challenging period, the outcome of the lawsuit will be pivotal in determining their future.
