Russia has announced its intention to respond firmly after reporting that it intercepted eight US-manufactured ATACMS missiles launched by Ukraine.
The missiles, capable of striking targets up to 300 kilometers away, represent a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, according to Moscow. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated these missiles were shot down alongside 72 unmanned aerial vehicles, marking a substantial air defense action.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense declared that these maneuvers by Ukraine, purportedly backed by Western allies, will prompt reciprocal actions. Several drones were allegedly destroyed, including some in the Leningrad region and one in Kursk, the latter being a previous target of Ukraine’s surprise attack last summer.
The decision by the outgoing US President to support Ukraine’s deployment of ATACMS was, in part, a reaction to Russia’s involvement of North Korean troops in the expanding conflict. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin has alluded to using the new nuclear-capable missile, ‘Oreshnik,’ potentially as a show of force against Kyiv’s defenses.
Recent reports indicate the experimental weapon was utilized in November, targeting Ukraine’s Dnipro region. Ukrainian drone assaults have subsequently led to temporary airport restrictions in St. Petersburg, as confirmed by Russian media.
Leningrad’s governor, Aleksandr Drozdenko, commented on the unprecedented number of UAVs intercepted, noting four incidents in his jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Ukrainian security representative Andrii Kovalenko described an attack on a Leningrad seaport, highlighting its economic and strategic importance to Russia.
Russia has also launched an extensive drone campaign against Ukraine, involving both Iranian Shahed drones and other imitation drones. Ukraine’s military reported the downing of numerous drones, although some succeeded in causing damage in Chernihiv and Sumy regions.
The situation in Ukraine remains precarious as Russian forces reportedly gain ground on the eastern front. Kyiv is notably concerned about potential shifts in US military support with the incoming administration, given previous commitments to end the conflict.
As the situation evolves, both nations are poised for further developments. Russia’s commitment to retaliate and Ukraine’s resistance reflect an intensifying conflict with significant international implications.
