Santa Clara Family Faces Dual Cancer Battles

In a solemn turn of events, a Santa Clara mother and her son are embroiled in a shared battle against cancer.

For years, Cherie Carter and her son, Carter Fulhors, have been united in their fight against cancer. However, the current holiday season carries a poignant weight, as Cherie has received news that her time may be limited. Despite this, the family is determined to find joy in their tradition of decorating their home together, cherishing what might be their last festive season.

Cherie, diagnosed with multiple myeloma—a form of blood cell cancer—has been undergoing treatment for 13 years. This longstanding battle has compelled her to confront the need to prepare her two sons for a future potentially without her presence. ‘They’re going to have a really heavy load on them, financially and emotionally,’ Cherie somberly acknowledges.

Carter, while combating brain cancer during his college years, also faced a stroke that required relearning fundamental skills like walking and talking. Throughout these challenges, he leaned on his mother’s unwavering support. Now, with his mother facing her own formidable health battle, Carter is intent on making this holiday season memorable. ‘I decided that I am going to do what I can to make this a nice holiday season,’ he states, finding solace in decorating their home, which serves as an emotional outlet amidst the overwhelming anxiety.

Cherie’s treatments—chemotherapy and medication—have afforded her more time, a precious commodity she has spent with her sons over the past decade. As she navigates the complexities of her condition, Cherie remains hopeful for another miracle, while actively arranging her affairs. To assist with the growing financial burdens of medical and potential funeral costs, Carter has launched an online fundraiser.

The Carter family, though facing overwhelming adversity, continues to hold onto hope and unity, drawing strength from each other as they navigate the difficult path ahead.
