Robert Gutierrez, a resident of South Miami, experienced firsthand the brazen nature of porch pirates when his doorbell camera recorded a theft just three hours after a package was delivered to his home. The video, now submitted to both the South Miami Police Department and local news outlets, shows a woman swiftly exiting a black Ford Mustang, running up to Gutierrez’s porch, and making off with the package in a matter of seconds.
Gutierrez, reflecting on the incident, noted the indifference displayed by the thief, stating, ‘They don’t even care. That’s what I noticed. She had the whole way leading up to the ring camera and didn’t make an effort to cover her face.’ Such nonchalance is alarming and highlights the boldness of these criminals, who seem unfazed by security measures.
The stolen package, which contained a holiday gift intended for Gutierrez’s daughter, was later discovered a block and a half away by a neighbor. Unfortunately, it had been torn apart and left empty, prompting Gutierrez to review the footage from his doorbell camera.
In light of this theft, South Miami police have issued warnings to residents, emphasizing the necessity of additional security measures during the holiday season, a time when such crimes are particularly prevalent. ‘During the holidays, it happens more. These are criminals…not the brightest people in the world,’ remarked Sgt. Fernando Bosch. ‘They don’t care if there are cameras; they will blatantly do it.’
Statistics reveal a worrying trend, with porch pirates stealing an estimated $12 billion worth of packages nationwide in 2023 alone. In Florida, the theft of a package valued over $40 can result in felony charges, highlighting the seriousness of these offenses.
