The Hubble Space Telescope, a cornerstone of astronomical exploration since its launch on April 24, 1990, is approaching its 35th anniversary. NASA, in collaboration with the Astronomical League, aims to mark this milestone by initiating a unique observation challenge designed for skywatchers globally.
Since its deployment by the space shuttle Discovery, the Hubble Space Telescope has achieved significant breakthroughs in our understanding of the universe. It has provided insights into phenomena such as dark matter, the universe’s expansion and age, stellar evolution, and the mysteries of black holes. To celebrate three and a half decades of these discoveries, NASA and the Astronomical League have orchestrated a year-long observational event.
Starting in 2025, the Hubble Night Sky Observing Challenge will invite amateur astronomers to explore the night sky with telescopes, emulating the observations made by Hubble itself. Each month, a list of celestial targets will be made available, accessible to those with telescopes with at least a six-inch aperture. This initiative will include guidance for observation from both Northern and Southern Hemispheres, ensuring global participation.
Participants will have access to detailed resources like finder charts to locate these objects. The sequence of targets will be shared a month in advance, offering skywatchers ample preparation time. January’s celestial lineup includes striking nebulae such as the Crab Nebula and the Orion Nebula, alongside luminous globular clusters. Observers are encouraged to compare their sightings with Hubble’s iconic images, bringing a tangible experience to amateur stargazers.
In addition to the joy of observation, participants will have the opportunity to earn silver and gold awards based on their observational achievements. These accolades come with a certificate and a commemorative pin. Importantly, membership in the Astronomical League is not a prerequisite for participation.
NASA emphasizes that while ground-based observations may differ from Hubble’s due to atmospheric interference, the challenge offers a chance to connect more personally with the cosmos. Full details of the challenge, including target lists, award criteria, and submission deadlines, will be provided online for interested participants.
The Hubble Night Sky Observing Challenge presents an exciting opportunity for astronomy enthusiasts to engage in observational activities reminiscent of the Hubble’s explorations. By participating, skywatchers can celebrate the legacy of this monumental telescope, contributing to a global community of stargazers inspired by Hubble’s enduring mission.
