The Parker Solar Probe, a pioneering spacecraft launched by NASA in 2018, has recently survived a historic encounter with the sun, as reported by NASA. This event marks the closest flyby of the solar surface by any human-made object. At this distance, the spacecraft came within 3.8 million miles of the sun, essentially ‘touching’ it. During this daring maneuver, the probe reached speeds of 430,000 miles per hour, setting a new record as the fastest spacecraft to date.
The journey of the Parker Solar Probe involves a series of Venus flybys to gain the necessary gravitational assist to reach such proximity to the sun. Having swung around Venus seven times, the spacecraft used these interactions to accelerate to its current velocity. Furthermore, the probe has completed 21 solar orbits prior to this recent accomplishment.
NASA mission officials received a beacon tone from the probe, confirming its functionality following the flyby. Nicola Fox, NASA’s associate administrator for science missions, stated in a recent update, ‘Right now, Parker Solar Probe has achieved what we designed the mission for.’ The probe ‘phoned home’ on the evening of December 24, though it is expected to provide a more comprehensive status report on New Year’s Day, January 1.
