Planetary Defenders Documentary Preview

Coming in Spring 2025, the documentary ‘Planetary Defenders’ focuses on how scientists are preparing for a potential asteroid threat to Earth.

The ‘Planetary Defenders’ documentary offers a detailed insight into the world of asteroid detection and planetary defense. It features a team of dedicated astronomers and scientists who are committed to tracking near-Earth asteroids, aiming to shield our planet from possible impacts. This project spotlights the teamwork and scientific dedication involved, intertwining advanced scientific endeavors with personal narratives.

Dr. Vishnu Reddy, a Professor of Planetary Science at the University of Arizona, remarked, “The dinosaurs went extinct because they didn’t have a space program. We do have one.” This highlights the importance of the global effort towards planetary defense.

In 2016, NASA established the Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO). This office plays a crucial role in finding, tracking, and understanding asteroids and comets that pose threats to Earth. Dr. Shantanu Naidu, an Asteroid Radar Researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, emphasizes the importance of these efforts by pointing to the Goldstone Solar System Radar—the world’s most powerful planetary radar.

Additionally, Dr. Cassandra Lejoly, a researcher with the University of Arizona’s SPACEWATCH® program, shares her motivations. She states, “I really like that I am protecting the planet. And yes, I’m not the one that’s with a cape pushing the asteroid away, that’s not what I do. In some ways, my little contribution might not help just myself, but someone in the future, and I think it’s very important to do that.” Her statement reflects the collective hope that these scientific efforts will benefit future generations.

The ‘Planetary Defenders’ documentary set for release in Spring 2025 promises to be an engaging presentation of the people and efforts at the frontline of safeguarding Earth from asteroid threats.
