The Astros have officially welcomed Christian Walker as their new first baseman, signing him on a three-year contract worth $60 million. This move comes on the heels of acquiring infielder Isaac Paredes from the Cubs, a trade that sent outfielder Kyle Tucker to Chicago. The Astros’ general manager, Dana Brown, clarified that Paredes is expected to take over at third base, leaving Walker to cover first base. Meanwhile, Bregman’s future with the Astros looks uncertain as he remains a free agent despite the team’s efforts to re-sign him.
Negotiations with Bregman, who has served as the Astros’ third baseman for nine seasons, hit a standstill despite a competitive offer. Brown expressed the organization’s regret over the impasse, stating they sought alternatives to maintain their competitive edge. The addition of Walker was prioritized after the Astros released first baseman José Abreu, who had been struggling halfway through his three-year, $58.5 million contract. Walker began his professional career with the Baltimore Orioles, debuting in 2014 but faced challenges in securing a stable position in the majors until 2019. He was briefly with Atlanta and Cincinnati before finding a long-term home in Arizona, where he evolved into a reliable hitter and a respected defensive asset. His current contract includes performance-based incentives, including bonuses for MVP standings and postseason achievements.
