Canadian sports fans have maintained their protest by booing the US national anthem at NBA and NHL games, even after US President Donald Trump temporarily paused tariffs on Canada.

During a recent NHL game at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, the American anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” was met with disapproval from the crowd prior to the Canucks securing a 3-0 win against the Colorado Avalanche, as reported by the Associated Press. The scene replicated itself in Toronto where Raptors fans also booed the anthem before the team’s match against the New York Knicks. However, these jeers were less intense compared to previous games, although the Canadian anthem, ‘O Canada,’ was notably greeted with enthusiasm.

Earlier, President Trump announced the imposition of tariffs including a 25% duty on most Canadian imports, all Mexican imports, and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods, promising significant price increases for American consumers. Consequently, Trump engaged in discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, which led to a one-month suspension of these tariffs, just before they were set to take effect. Trump attributed this decision to Canada’s commitment to enhancing border security, especially controlling the influx of drugs like Fentanyl into the US, despite reports indicating Canada’s minimal role in such drugs entering the country.

Meanwhile, fans in Winnipeg also expressed their discontent during an NHL game between the Jets and the Carolina Hurricanes, with mild boos escalating towards the end of the American anthem. Nevertheless, the Jets triumphed in their game, marking their seventh consecutive victory.

Despite the temporary suspension of tariffs, the reaction from Canadian sports fans highlights ongoing tensions and dissatisfaction. This situation underscores the complexities involved in international trade relations and national sentiments.
