In a strategic move to enhance their defensive lineup, the Colorado Rapids have acquired center-backs Chidozie Awaziem and Ian Murphy from FC Cincinnati. This transaction, announced on Monday, is part of the Rapids’ efforts to strengthen their squad following a noteworthy 2024 season.
The trade deal provides FC Cincinnati with up to $1.2 million in General Allocation Money, with $1 million guaranteed and an additional $200,000 based on conditions. Moreover, Cincinnati retains a sell-on fee, should either player be transferred abroad or traded within Major League Soccer (MLS).
Expressing enthusiasm over the acquisitions, Rapids’ president Pádraig Smith highlighted the leadership and experience Awaziem brings to the team. Smith described Awaziem as a ‘powerful defender’ with notable experience in European leagues and on the international stage. Meanwhile, Ian Murphy’s athleticism and proven track record within MLS were underscored as valuable assets for the Rapids as they aim to build on their previous successes.
Awaziem, who is 27 years old, recently joined FC Cincinnati from Boavista, a top-tier Portuguese team. During his tenure at Cincinnati, he contributed three assists over 14 appearances in various competitions. Prior to this trade, Awaziem had the opportunity to play alongside Reggie Cannon, a current Rapids defender, at Boavista.
Murphy, at 24, was initially selected in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft. Throughout his career with Cincinnati, he accumulated one goal and one assist across 80 league matches and played a crucial role in winning the 2023 MLS Supporters’ Shield. Both the Rapids and Cincinnati had their playoff runs in the 2024 MLS Cup but exited in the first round. The clubs are set to compete in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup, marking another opportunity to demonstrate their prowess on the field.
The addition of Awaziem and Murphy signifies the Colorado Rapids’ commitment to refining their defensive strategies and enhancing their squad’s overall quality. As the Rapids anticipate future competitions, these players are expected to be instrumental in solidifying the team’s defensive lineup.
