In a decisive move, the New York Giants have chosen to retain general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll after a difficult 3-14 season. The 2024 season was one of the worst in the history of the New York Giants. However, Mara and Tisch believe in the process and vision that Schoen and Daboll have put in place for the team. Both Schoen and Daboll were brought into the Giants’ fold in 2022. Their initial year was promising, marked by a 9-7-1 record and a notable playoff appearance. During this time, they managed to secure a victory against Minnesota in the wild-card round before being defeated by eventual NFC champions Philadelphia in the divisional round. Daboll’s efforts were recognized nationally, earning him the AP NFL Coach of the Year award.
The subsequent season, however, saw a drop in performance. Quarterback Daniel Jones, who had secured a substantial four-year contract, saw his form decline due to injuries and inconsistent play. After a disappointing start of 2-8, Jones was benched, eventually requesting and receiving his release. This ushered in a turbulent period for the team, trying out quarterbacks Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock, which led to only one victory in the final seven games.
The Giant’s struggles were further compounded by not re-signing star running back Saquon Barkley, who went on to perform impressively for a rival team, Philadelphia, nearly breaking an NFL record for rushing yards. Fans expressed their frustration by flying protest banners over MetLife Stadium during the Giants’ last two games, calling for significant changes in the team’s front office.
Despite the adverse season, the Giants’ management remains committed to Schoen and Daboll, granting them the opportunity to rebuild. Schoen and Daboll are tasked with the crucial role of finding a new starting quarterback in the upcoming draft, where the Giants hold the third overall pick. They aim to improve their team’s competitive edge in the NFC East, especially after finishing with no wins in the division.
