In a significant blow to the Miami Heat, guard Dru Smith has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a torn Achilles in his left leg, sustained during Monday night’s victory against the Brooklyn Nets.
The unfortunate incident occurred amid Miami’s 110-95 triumph over Brooklyn, where Smith sustained the injury and was promptly evaluated. An MRI conducted the following day confirmed the initial diagnosis of a torn Achilles, ending Smith’s season prematurely again.
This represents the third consecutive season in which Smith has faced a substantial injury. Previously, he missed the majority of the 2023-24 season after tearing the ACL in his right knee, an injury that transpired when he slipped off a raised section of the floor during a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 2021-22 season was also cut short due to a knee injury while playing for Miami’s G League team.
Head coach Erik Spoelstra, reflecting on Smith’s predicament, expressed deep respect for the player’s resilience and tenacity. “You don’t want to see anybody get hurt, but we all have such incredible, deep respect for his journey and what he’s had to overcome,” Spoelstra remarked. “I’ve seen him tirelessly working through treatment and rehab—his fortitude is truly admirable. You end up rooting for guys like Dru.”
Prior to the injury, Smith was averaging career-high statistics with 6.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals across 19.1 minutes per game. His performance was under a two-way contract, which was positioned for an upgrade to a standard NBA contract, potentially doubling his salary. His proactive presence in the Heat’s rotation was evident as he appeared in nine of the first 15 games of the current season.
Smith’s journey in the NBA thus far has been marked by flashes of potential stunted by unfortunate injuries. Over 38 games with Miami and Brooklyn, he has averaged 4.5 points, demonstrating potential to contribute significantly when healthy.
Dru Smith’s recent Achilles injury marks yet another chapter in his challenging career journey with the Miami Heat. His perseverance amidst recurring setbacks garners immense respect from teammates and fans alike.
