In a landmark move, Inter Miami CF has traded forward Leonardo Campana to the New England Revolution for a record-breaking $2.5 million in General Allocation Money (GAM), spanning the years 2025 and 2026. This trade marks the highest domestic transaction in Major League Soccer history, surpassing the previous record set by FC Dallas in January 2022.
As part of this significant deal, Inter Miami will retain a percentage of the proceeds from any future transfers involving Campana. Additionally, the club stands to earn up to $750,000 in GAM if the player achieves certain performance-based incentives. Inter Miami’s president of football operations, Raúl SanllehÃ, expressed gratitude for Campana’s contributions, stating, “Leo has been an important player for Inter Miami over the past three years. His contributions in attack were key throughout a historic period in which we clinched our first two titles. We are thankful for his contributions in a crucial time of growth for our Club and wish him the best in the future.”
Campana departs from Inter Miami with an impressive record of 32 goals and 10 assists over 100 appearances. His performance has positioned him as the second all-time leading scorer for the team, and one of only three players in the club’s history to reach 100 appearances.
The decision to trade Campana was influenced by Major League Soccer’s stringent roster regulations. While Campana was a vital player for Inter Miami, his existing contract presented challenges for the team to comply with league rules. His tenure at the club saw him play a critical role in Inter Miami’s triumph in the 2023 Leagues Cup and their 2024 Supporters’ Shield victory. He also contributed to the team achieving a league record for the most points recorded in a single season in 2024.
Before finalizing the deal, it was reported that Inter Miami had $3,300,159 in General Allocation Money, offering the club a strategic advantage to enhance their roster ahead of the upcoming season. The club is set to begin its 2025 campaign with a match against New York City FC on February 22 at Chase Stadium. They will also engage in preseason matches against Orlando City FC and the Mexican team, Club América, as well as a Concacaf Champions Cup clash with Sporting Kansas City.
Inter Miami’s strategic decision to trade Leonardo Campana to the New England Revolution not only sets a new benchmark in MLS domestic trades but also highlights the complex balancing act required to comply with league regulations while striving for competitive excellence. Campana leaves a legacy of impressive achievements at Inter Miami, and the incoming funds provide the club with enhanced flexibility for future roster improvements.
