In a remarkable achievement, Syracuse’s quarterback Kyle McCord has broken the Atlantic Coast Conference single-season passing record previously held by Deshaun Watson.
During the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, McCord’s performance was nothing short of exceptional. On the first play of the second half, he completed a 50-yard pass to Darrell Gill Jr., pushing his season total to 4,594 yards and surpassing Watson’s record set in 2016 of 4,593 yards.
Entering the game, McCord had amassed 4,326 passing yards, positioning him fifth on the ACC’s single-season leaderboard. With a requirement of 268 yards to claim the record, McCord executed a perfect play, hitting the exact total needed with his pass to Gill, who managed an impressive over-the-shoulder catch.
Further into the game, McCord continued to showcase his skills with a series of precise passes. He threw a 9-yard pass to Trebor Pena before connecting again on a play that unfortunately resulted in a seven-yard loss. Despite this minor setback, the drive underlined McCord’s consistent offensive prowess.
McCord’s transition from Ohio State to Syracuse has been pivotal not only for his career but also for the team’s record books. He began the Holiday Bowl with a formidable 4,326 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 367 completions for the season. His first-half performance against Washington State was commanding, as he threw for 218 yards and three touchdowns, two of which were caught by Oronde Gadsden II.
Kyle McCord’s record-breaking performance in the Holiday Bowl highlights his outstanding abilities and solidifies his place in ACC history. His skillful play and determination have redefined Syracuse’s offensive game and set a new standard for future quarterbacks.
