In a historic moment in Los Angeles, LeBron James etched his name in the NBA history books by surpassing Michael Jordan’s long-standing record for 30-point games, achieving this milestone during the Lakers’ decisive win over the Atlanta Hawks.
James’ achievement came with an 18-foot jumper, marking his 563rd regular-season game scoring at least 30 points. This surpasses Jordan’s record set in 2003 after 1,072 games over 15 seasons. In contrast, James achieved this in his 1,523rd game, spanning 22 seasons.
James, who hails from Akron, Ohio, revered Jordan growing up, considering him an ‘inspiration’ and aspired to emulate him. When James moved past Jordan to claim fourth on the NBA’s career scoring list in March 2019, he was visibly moved, expressing profound respect for his idol on the bench.
In the same game against Atlanta, James also stepped ahead of Dirk Nowitzki in all-time regular-season games played, taking the fourth spot with 1,523 appearances.
James, who turned 40 recently, remains among the few players active today who witnessed Jordan’s peak performance in the 1990s with the Chicago Bulls firsthand. Despite his age, James continues to deliver outstanding performances, scoring 38 points against Portland just a day prior, which matched Jordan’s 30-point game record.
In the game against Portland, James scored seven 3-pointers, securing the third-highest point tally ever recorded by a player aged 40 and above. This achievement is only surpassed by two of Jordan’s games played shortly after turning 40 with Washington.
Having become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer last season, James continues to hold multiple records for career longevity. Notably, he has scored at least 10 points in 1,253 consecutive games over 18 years, far surpassing Jordan’s record of 866 games between 1986 and 2001.
LeBron James’ latest accomplishment reaffirms his status as one of basketball’s greats. By continuing to break records well into his career, he not only honors the legacy of players like Michael Jordan but also sets new standards for future generations in the sport.
