After a challenging performance in the 2024 season, the Miami Hurricanes have decided to part ways with their defensive coordinator, Lance Guidry.
The Miami Hurricanes struggled defensively throughout the 2024 season, allowing an average of 23.9 points per game, which placed them 60th nationally. Within their conference, the numbers were even more concerning, with the team giving up an average of 30.8 points per game, ranking them 14th. Such statistics highlighted the defensive shortcomings that the team faced.
Significant issues were identified in the team’s ability to prevent big plays. Over the course of the season, the Hurricanes’ defense allowed nine plays that resulted in gains of 50 yards or more. In addition, opponents found it relatively easy to score against Miami once they reached the red zone, with a troubling 62.9 percent success rate in turning red zone visits into touchdowns.
Tackling effectiveness was another critical area in need of improvement. According to Pro Football Focus, the Hurricanes ranked 99th nationally in tackling efficiency, underscoring significant gaps in defensive execution and individual player performance in defensive roles.
In response to these challenges, head coach Mario Cristobal expressed his gratitude for Lance Guidry’s contributions to the program but acknowledged the pressing need for change to enhance the team’s defensive prospects. Cristobal stated, “I want to first thank Coach Guidry for his contributions to the University of Miami. In a continuous effort to always improve all aspects of our program, I have decided to make a change on defense. We will move forward and make decisions that provide our players, staff and program the best opportunity to win and develop at the highest level.”
The search for a new defensive coordinator is expected to commence immediately as the Hurricanes aim to bolster their defensive capabilities ahead of the 2025 season.
