Monarch’s football team delivered a stunning comeback win against Homestead in the 6A regional quarterfinal, securing a 28-21 victory at Coconut Creek High School.
Monarch’s senior standout, Samari Reed, played a pivotal role in the team’s success, showcasing both defensive and offensive prowess. With an interception, two pass breakups, a 23-yard touchdown run, 47 rushing yards, and 43 receiving yards, Reed was indispensable on the field. “The guys need me on the field, so I am going to do whatever I have to,” Reed commented, emphasizing his commitment to the team’s victory despite personal challenges.
The game’s climax came late when sophomore Jack Spaeder made a decisive 8-yard touchdown run with just 1:22 left on the clock, clinching the win for Monarch. Following that, Monarch’s defense, led by Makhi Miller’s 8-yard sack, effectively stifled Homestead’s final attempts to regain the lead.
Monarch began the game assertively with quarterback Florentino Lopez driving a 95-yard march for a 16-yard TD run, establishing an early lead. However, the match saw swings in momentum as Monarch’s aggressive strategies sometimes backfired, notably when Kamari Morrison’s interception set up a touchdown for Homestead just before halftime, shifting the score to 7-6 in Homestead’s favor.
Despite setbacks, including Lopez suffering a shoulder injury, Monarch’s resilience was clear. The Knights regained the lead with another Lopez TD run and a standout performance by Reed, who added a 23-yard touchdown following a negated 53-yard interception return.
Homestead, known for its competitive spirit and having not lost a game when scoring over 14 points this season, was unable to maintain the advantage despite impressive plays like Morrison’s one-handed interception. Monarch’s strategic adjustments, especially the effective use of both quarterbacks in running plays, proved decisive in wearing down Homestead’s defense.
Monarch’s coach, Calvin Davis, acknowledged strategic missteps but praised the team’s ability to seize crucial opportunities. “We have been talking about finishing and preparing for this moment,” Davis noted, reflecting the team’s preparation and determination.
The victory propels Monarch to the 6A regional semifinal, where they will face Miami Southridge, presenting another opportunity to demonstrate their championship potential.
