NASCAR Developments Team Expansions, A Surprising Crew Change, and Name Alteration

This weekend’s NASCAR events delivered unexpected team changes and expansions, with notable surprises in crew arrangements and racing awards.

Roush Fenway Racing (RFK) and 23XI Racing have both announced expansion plans for the 2025 season, signaling significant growth within the sport. Ryan Preece, previously with Stewart-Haas Racing and JTG-Daugherty Racing, is set to join Brad Keselowski and Chris Buescher at RFK Racing, marking the first three-driver lineup for RFK since 2016. Concurrently, Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing will welcome Riley Herbst as a third driver. Herbst’s addition comes despite ongoing legal matters, largely due to his connection with Monster Energy, enriching the team’s marketing capacity.

Chase Elliott has once again secured the NASCAR Most Popular Driver Award, bringing his total tally to seven consecutive wins. This accolade, organized by the National Motorsports Press Association, continues the Elliott family’s impressive history in the sport. Additionally, Greg Biffle has been honored with the Myers Brothers Award for his significant contributions, particularly highlighted by his humanitarian efforts during Hurricane Helene.

In a surprising development, Denny Hamlin has been assigned a new crew chief at Joe Gibbs Racing, replacing Chris Gabehart with Chris Gayle. Despite winning 22 races together, Hamlin admitted to being taken aback by the decision, describing it as unexpected. Gabehart will now serve as JGR’s competition director.

JTG Daugherty Racing has undergone a rebranding to become Hyak Motorsports, following Gordon Smith’s acquisition as the majority owner. The team, known for its recent successes including a Daytona 500 victory, will operate under a name meaning “fast” in Chinook Jargon, reflecting its ambitions in the NASCAR Cup Series.

NASCAR’s recent developments emphasize the dynamic nature of the sport, with teams expanding and reorganizing to enhance competitiveness. These changes not only illustrate the business aspects of NASCAR but also highlight the ongoing pursuit of excellence and innovation within the racing community.
