Ohio State University is gearing up for a highly anticipated rematch against the University of Oregon, following a decisive victory over Tennessee in the first round of the playoffs.
The Buckeyes have been eyeing a second chance against Oregon ever since the Ducks handed them a loss on October 12th. Initially, Ohio State had their hopes pinned on meeting Oregon in the Big Ten Championship. However, that opportunity slipped away after a loss to Michigan, which cost them their spot in the title game.
Their recent 42-17 victory over Tennessee has now secured their place in the quarterfinals, setting up a highly anticipated showdown with Oregon at the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day. Ohio State quarterback Will Howard expressed the collective anticipation within the team, stating, “It’s going to be a heck of an opportunity for all of us. I think we’ve all been looking forward to this one, another crack at these guys. The way the last one ended didn’t sit right with me.”
In their previous encounter, Ohio State led twice during the second half but ultimately faltered in a close 32-31 loss. The game ended with controversy after a penalty call on freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith, followed by Howard’s scramble as time expired. This game remains the season’s closest contest for Oregon, who remain undefeated at 13-0.
Ohio State’s defense, now deemed the best nationwide, is keen on redemption. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles indicated the team has used the prior loss as a motivator, explaining, “We’re looking forward to the opportunity because it was not a great game for us. And I know, quite frankly, the guys got a little pissed off. They used that game as motivation. So, I’m sure they’re looking forward to another opportunity.”
The Buckeyes’ recent performance against Tennessee showcased their strengths, highlighting Howard’s 311 passing yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins each contributed two rushing touchdowns. The defense was formidable, sacking Tennessee’s quarterback Nico Iamaleava four times and restricting him to a season-low of 104 passing yards.
Oregon’s head coach Dan Lanning acknowledged Ohio State’s capabilities after their previous encounter, describing the Buckeyes as an elite team without weaknesses. Ohio State is looking to leverage the Rose Bowl stage to prove him right while avenging their earlier loss.
This upcoming game is one of several intriguing quarterfinal matches, including a face-off between Penn State and Boise State on December 31st, as well as Texas against Arizona State and Notre Dame versus Georgia on January 1st.
The Rose Bowl promises to be a thrilling stage for Ohio State’s quest for redemption against Oregon. As the Buckeyes prepare for this crucial rematch, their focus and determination remain clear, fueled by past experiences and a strong performance streak.
