PASADENA, Calif. – Oregon’s remarkable unbeaten run met an unexpected halt at the hands of Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, as the top-seeded team struggled to withstand a relentless onslaught from the Buckeyes.
Ohio State’s overwhelming performance began barely three plays into the game with Jeremiah Smith securing a 45-yard touchdown pass from Will Howard. From that point, the Ducks found themselves unable to recover, facing a continual barrage from the Buckeyes.
Oregon conceded points on six of Ohio State’s first seven drives, while their own offense faltered, seeing success only once in Buckeyes’ territory during their first six attempts. “We didn’t adjust fast enough,” remarked coach Dan Lanning, as Oregon faced critical challenges in executing their usual play strategy.
Dillon Gabriel, Oregon’s quarterback, struggled to recreate his explosive play style from prior games. Despite achieving four notable completions in a previous victory over Ohio State, his first substantial completion in this match did not arrive until halftime loomed. “They dropped eight. First game they played us man,” explained receiver Tez Johnson, highlighting the strategic shift Ohio State employed.

Gabriel expressed the frustration of missing out on big plays, noting, “You plan to create explosives… but if you don’t go get the third you can’t move forward.”
Gabriel faced immense pressure, succumbing to eight sacks as Oregon was forced to shift focus entirely to passing in the second half. Additionally, the absence of running back Jordan James due to injury, and Evan Stewart’s inability to play, further hindered their offensive capabilities.
Ohio State’s execution contrasted sharply with Oregon’s struggles, effectively silencing the Ducks who found no rhythm akin to previous encounters. “It was very shocking… it was a different atmosphere we hadn’t been in this year,” said Stewart, reflecting on the game dynamics.
Although the season ended disappointingly for Oregon, much was achieved during their inaugural Big Ten journey. The team showcased resilience and skill, setting high standards that outgoing players like Gabriel hope future Oregon players will build upon.
