In a recent update regarding Florida Atlantic University’s search for a new head football coach, it has been clarified that Ray Lewis is not a candidate for the position, despite initial reports suggesting otherwise.

The speculation began when ESPN’s Senior NFL Insider, Adam Schefter, reported that the NFL Hall of Famer and former Miami Hurricanes star was in line for the job. The position became available following the dismissal of Tom Herman, FAU’s previous head coach, earlier this week. However, sources within FAU’s sports department have confirmed that the university has no plans to interview Lewis for the role.

This decision appears rooted in Lewis’s lack of experience within the college coaching and recruiting arena, which are critical aspects of leading a university football team. While Ray Lewis’s illustrious career as a linebacker in the NFL and his star status in Miami are undisputed, these achievements do not necessarily translate to collegiate coaching competency.

Historically, FAU has taken chances on hiring high-profile coaches without direct ties to the state or the school, such as Lane Kiffin before Tom Herman. Both coaches had a proven track record of success elsewhere, accompanied by significant coaching experience, distinguishing them from Lewis, who is yet to build such a resume in coaching.

In light of Herman’s departure, FAU has named Chad Lunsford as the interim head coach to steer the team through the final two games of the 2024 season. As the search for a permanent head coach continues, the university is evaluating candidates who can bring seasoned coaching expertise to the program.

Florida Atlantic University remains focused on finding a head coach who possesses the necessary experience and skills to elevate the football program. Ray Lewis, despite his significant contributions to the sport, does not fit the current criteria for FAU’s head coaching role. The search for a new leader is ongoing, promising a strategic choice aligned with the university’s goals for success.
