In a decisive move, the Formula 1 team Red Bull has parted ways with driver Sergio Perez following an underwhelming performance over multiple seasons.
The announcement came on Wednesday, marking an end to Perez’s tenure at Red Bull two years before his contract was set to expire. Red Bull stated that they would reveal Perez’s replacement “in due course.”
Throughout 2024, Perez, affectionately known as “Checo,” had a promising start with podium finishes in four of the first five races. However, his performance declined significantly, failing to secure a top-three position since then. Notably, his last finish higher than sixth place was in May, while his teammate, Max Verstappen, secured nine race wins and clinched his fourth consecutive championship.
The disparity in results between Perez and Verstappen recalls the 1994 Formula 1 season. Perez reflected on his years with Red Bull in a heartfelt statement, expressing gratitude for the unforgettable experiences he shared with the team. “Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable experience and I’ll always cherish the successes we achieved together,” Perez stated, extending a special thanks to fans, particularly those from Mexico, for their constant support. His parting words emphasized resilience: “Never give up.”
During his stint with Red Bull, Perez earned a reputation as a strategic team player, even earning the nickname “Mexican Minister of Defense” during his initial year. He played a pivotal role in supporting Verstappen’s early successes by tactically holding up rival drivers. However, this season, the gap between the two drivers widened, diminishing Perez’s role in team strategies.
Despite Red Bull’s decision, Christian Horner acknowledged Perez’s contributions, commending his determination and ability to push the limits, particularly highlighted by his five wins on street circuits. This, said Horner, was a testament to Perez’s tenacity and team spirit.
