St. Thomas Aquinas is on a quest to achieve a record-tying fifth consecutive state title in girls’ basketball, a feat shared by only a few other Broward County schools. However, this season brings new challenges as they navigate these ambitions with a fresh coach and roster changes.

Former coach Oliver Berens, who led St. Thomas Aquinas to four straight championships, has stepped down after an impressive run that saw him accumulate a 170-59 record over seven seasons. Taking his place is Brandon Stewart, who comes with a commendable track record from Daytona Beach Mainland High, guiding them to a state title in 2023.

The team has experienced significant changes, with the graduation of four starters. However, they still boast 5-foot, 11-inch senior guard Nyla McFadden, a standout player committed to Penn State. New to the team are junior Ronneisha Thomas from Mainland, Dillard transfers freshman London Thomas, and Sara Lee Blair, a 6-foot-5 senior committed to George Mason. The Raiders opened the season with a narrow 54-52 victory against defending Class 5A champion American Heritage, with McFadden scoring 21 points.

American Heritage, a formidable opponent, returns four key starters, including Jasleen Green, the two-time Player of the Year, junior Ta’Niyah Davis, and senior Dezuray McGill. Despite moving to Class 4A, they remain a strong contender in the state.

Somerset Prep, a surprise team from North Lauderdale, features standout Riley Stoker, an Appalachian State signee. They have strengthened their roster with three new transfers and are anticipated to make a significant impact this season.

Another team to watch is Grandview Prep, which is looking to improve after three losing seasons. Under the guidance of new coach Jeff Price, who brings extensive experience from collegiate coaching, the team benefits from notable transfers like Lena Girardi. Girardi, was instrumental in Westminster Academy’s state championship win in 2022, has made her presence felt early in the season.

Dillard High School, with a storied history of 10 state titles, is in a rebuilding phase under new coach Whitney Fields. The team is young and adjusting, but Fields is optimistic about their development potential.

Northeast High School looks promising with the addition of senior Nykeria Flowers and junior Jazmine Jones. They join sophomore standout Ya’Niya Young, setting up a strong lineup for the Hurricanes.

Meanwhile, Westminster Academy is relying on the sharpshooting skills of senior Maddie Wallhoff and the leadership of Markeli Jones-Tynes to navigate through their season.

In Palm Beach County, Somerset Academy Canyons and King’s Academy are strengthening their campaigns, with the likes of Alana Pinnock and Jade Jones making headlines. The competition in Class 3A is expected to be intense.

Key competition dates have been outlined, including district tournaments in February and state playoffs in late February and March. Last season’s state champions across various classes set high benchmarks for aspirants this year.

As St. Thomas Aquinas embarks on their journey for a historic fifth consecutive title, they face the pressures of maintaining dominance in the face of change. With experienced players and promising new additions, the Raiders are poised to make an impactful statement this season. The high school basketball scene in Broward and Palm Beach counties is vibrant, with numerous teams ready to rise to the challenge and possibly upset traditional powerhouses.
