Tulsa has officially announced Tre Lamb, formerly of East Tennessee State, as their new head football coach. Athletic Director Justin Moore expressed confidence in Lamb’s ability to lead the program towards a successful future.
Tre Lamb, aged 35, has been appointed the new head coach for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team. Known for his energy and proven track record, Lamb is set to invigorate the team following their 8-16 performance over the past two seasons.
Justin Moore, Tulsa’s athletic director appointed in July, highlighted Lamb’s potential to restore the winning tradition at Tulsa during this modern era of college football. Lamb’s history of turning around teams at East Tennessee State (ETSU) and Gardner-Webb was a significant factor in his hiring. At ETSU, he improved the team’s record to 7-5 in his first season, up from 3-8 the previous year. Similarly, during his four-year tenure at Gardner-Webb, he transformed a 3-9 team into one that competed in back-to-back FCS playoffs by 2022 and 2023.
Tre Lamb himself has expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, emphasizing his commitment to steering Tulsa towards championship contention. ‘Being the head football coach at Tulsa is a responsibility I will not take lightly,’ Lamb stated. He looks forward to assembling a coaching staff and building a competitive roster that would excite both students and fans.
Lamb’s expertise in offense is particularly aligned with the strategies of the American Athletic Conference, where wide-open play dominates. Additionally, Tulsa values Lamb’s experience with Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) initiatives and the transfer portal, which have become integral in college athletics. Tulsa’s competitive NIL/revenue sharing opportunities were part of their appeal to coaching candidates like Lamb.
Lamb has also been recognized for his leadership during challenging times. A notable instance was when he guided his team through a difficult 12-hour bus journey amidst Hurricane Helene, leading to a victorious game against Citadel. His football lineage is impressive; with his father, Hal, winning multiple state titles in Georgia, and both his grandfather and uncle having successful coaching careers.
In taking over from Kevin Wilson, who was dismissed after less than two seasons, Lamb brings a fresh perspective to Tulsa’s football ambitions. Lamb and his family are eager to establish their roots in Tulsa and make it their home.
Tre Lamb’s appointment marks a new chapter for Tulsa’s football program. With his leadership and strategic vision, there is optimism for a revived and competitive team.
