In a thrilling Big 12 Conference opener, the University of Central Florida (UCF) showcased their resilience and skill, securing an 87-83 win against Texas Tech in Lubbock. The victory marks UCF’s sixth consecutive win, setting a promising tone for their Big 12 campaign.

Darius Johnson played a pivotal role in UCF’s triumph, contributing 24 points and making crucial free throws in the closing moments of the game. As the Knights saw their 18-point lead diminish to just one, Johnson’s performance from the foul line was instrumental in maintaining their edge.

The game unfolded with UCF taking a commanding lead thanks to a strong 24-12 run in the early part of the second half. This effort transformed their eight-point halftime lead into a more substantial 71-53 advantage. However, Texas Tech responded with a notable 11-0 run, spearheaded by Chance McMillian, narrowing the gap significantly.

Keyshawn Hall also made a significant impact, recording 22 points and achieving a perfect four-of-four from three-point range. His aggressive play against Texas Tech’s Darrion Williams was a highlight, as was his contribution of eight rebounds.

In a tense finale, Texas Tech’s JT Toppin brought his team within a point, scoring consecutively in the last minute. Despite the pressure, UCF held firm, assisted by Johnson’s proficiency at the free-throw line. Toppin completed the game with an impressive 26 points and 10 rebounds, marking his fifth double-double in recent games.

Other notable performances included Moustapha Thiam’s 10 points for UCF, while Federiko Federiko and McMillian each added 12 for Texas Tech. Elijah Hawkins and Darrion Williams contributed 11 points apiece to the Red Raiders’ effort.

UCF’s win against Texas Tech not only enhances their record but also sets a solid foundation as they continue in the Big 12. The key performances by players like Johnson and Hall highlight the team’s depth and potential as they advance in the season.
