In a groundbreaking move, the US Open is set to offer exemptions to players from the LIV Golf tour, marking a significant development in professional golf circles.
The USGA has announced a new qualification pathway specifically for LIV Golf players, who will now be eligible for entry into the prestigious US Open tournament. Starting with the event scheduled for June 12-15 at Oakmount Country Club, the highest-ranked player from the top three in the LIV Golf Individual Standings, as of May 19, will receive an exemption, provided they are not currently exempt. This amendment signals an effort towards reconciliation between the historically traditional USGA and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour, which began operations in 2022. The USGA’s Chief Championships Officer, John Bodenhamer, emphasized their commitment to offering club spots to those demonstrating exceptional talent, stating, ‘We continuously evaluate talent levels on professional tours and in amateur events.’
Traditionally, players from the LIV Golf circuit have secured spots based on their performance records. Noteworthy players such as Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, and past champion Bryson DeChambeau are already exempt for this year’s US Open. Other prominent players, like Joaquin Niemann, have gained entry into other major tournaments, such as the Masters and the PGA Championship, through special invitations.
Notably, this new pathway is a formal step towards integrating LIV Golf players into major tournaments, as acknowledged by LIV Golf CEO, Scott O’Neil, who expressed appreciation for the USGA’s leadership and commitment to the sport’s growth globally. He remarked, ‘Every golf fan in the world longs to see the greatest players in the world competing on golf’s biggest stages at the majors.’
Furthermore, the US Open will extend this opportunity to more players by 2026, offering two spots to top-ranking LIV Golf players in the final standings of 2025.
