In a remarkable display on Saturday night, the Washington Wizards ended their prolonged losing streak by defeating the Denver Nuggets 122-113. The victory came despite an extraordinary performance by Nikola Jokic, who scored a career-high 56 points.
Jokic’s herculean effort included 38 field goal attempts, also a personal best, along with 16 rebounds and eight assists. However, his standout individual performance could not compensate for the absence of key teammates Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon, and Dario Saric, all sidelined due to injuries. This left Jokic carrying much of the load for Denver.
Meanwhile, the Wizards capitalized on Jokic’s one-man show. Jordan Poole was instrumental in Washington’s win, achieving 39 points and setting a personal record with nine three-pointers. The Wizards collectively sank 16 three-pointers, significantly outpacing Denver’s five out of 24 attempts.
The Wizards maintained consistent pressure, leading 69-57 at halftime. Jokic’s 23-point surge in the third quarter trimmed the deficit, but the Wizards held firm. By the fourth quarter, Washington retained control, staying ahead by six points as Jokic rested briefly. When he returned, the Wizards extended their lead to 108-95.
Justin Champagnie’s crucial bank shot late in the game elevated the Wizard’s lead to 118-111, diminishing any hopes of a Nuggets comeback. Even with Denver’s reliance on Jokic, they lacked the broader team balance needed for victory. Julian Strawther provided some support from the bench with 18 points, but it wasn’t enough to offset Washington’s cohesive effort.
For the Wizards, the win was particularly sweet given their own injury challenges, with Kyle Kuzma and Alex Sarr absent. The victory marked their first since October 30, ending a 16-game streak that matched a franchise record for consecutive losses.
This victory not only marks a turning point for the Wizards but also highlights the challenges facing the Nuggets without a fully-staffed roster. Both teams will need to adjust quickly for their upcoming games, with the Nuggets heading to Atlanta and the Wizards hosting Memphis.
