Tragedy struck Fort Lauderdale in the early hours of New Year’s Day when a man was fatally struck by a stray bullet while sharing a moment of affection with his boyfriend.
The heartbreaking incident occurred as Chris Dillon and his boyfriend, Angel Nunez, were outside Dillon’s home, enjoying what was described as a loving moment. “I grabbed the back of his head and he grabbed the back of my head and forcefully had the most beautiful kiss, it was so beautiful, backed off, I said, ‘I love you,’ he said ‘I love you,’ and then he fell,” recalled Dillon in an emotional interview. Unfortunately, Nunez, 50, succumbed to a stray bullet, with authorities affirming that the shooting was not a targeted act and the origin of the bullet remains under investigation.
This tragic event is not isolated. On the same day, in Miami-Dade County, a 10-year-old girl met a similarly untimely death as a result of another stray bullet. “How insane is this, a 10-year-old girl, and it’s happened many times over the years,” Dillon lamented, expressing his frustration at the randomness of seemingly celebratory gunfire causing innocent casualties. He called for stronger measures to confront this issue.
In a related incident in Fort Lauderdale, a family experienced a near miss on New Year’s Eve. They were observing fireworks when they heard a peculiar noise followed by a bang. Mike Stokes, a member of the family, described hearing a ‘distinct shhh and boom’ and initially mistaking the sound for a skyrocket. The family discovered a bullet in their pool the following morning, which had narrowly missed Stokes and his daughter. “She was quite shaken by the idea that someone is that careless, that stupid, that they don’t know the rule of what comes up must go down,” he explained.
These incidents cast a shadow over the traditional celebrations, highlighting the unintended consequences of reckless celebratory gunfire. Local law enforcement continues to investigate the incidents to prevent such tragedies from occurring again in the future.
The tragic death of Angel Nunez and similar occurrences in South Florida serve as stark reminders of the dangers associated with celebratory gunfire. The seemingly benign act of shooting into the air can have devastating effects, as evidenced by these incidents. It underscores the need for community awareness and preventive measures to ensure that festive occasions do not end in sorrow.
