As Black Friday approaches, the City of Tampa is actively promoting local businesses through its annual “Shop Small Tampa” initiative, aiming to divert attention from crowded malls and large chains.
The city has introduced this campaign to support small, independent shops during the peak shopping season. According to Janelle McGregor with the City of Tampa, they are striving to give these local businesses an added advantage as the holiday shopping frenzy approaches. ‘We want to create a local dimension to the typical national shopping events’, McGregor explained.
The initiative includes an online directory, showcasing local stores that offer distinct gifts perfect for the holiday season. This strategy not only aids small businesses but also enhances the sense of community among residents.
Gwendolyn Henderson, who runs the Black English Bookstore in Tampa Heights, finds this local-first approach significant. ‘It’s remarkable that people are consciously choosing to shop locally,’ she stated. Celebrating her first year as a bookstore owner, Henderson emphasized the unique opportunity her store presents to engage with the community.
Robby Wages, owner of the Fancy Free Nursery, shared a similar sentiment about the importance of an in-store experience. Relying entirely on physical sales, Wages highlighted the essence of being present in the store, where customers can personally connect with their offerings. ‘It’s about what resonates with them when they’re here,’ he said.
Both entrepreneurs agree that shopping locally offers more than just products; it delivers an experience unmatched by online shopping or large retail outlets. ‘The experience at Black English Bookstore is about the atmosphere,’ Henderson noted, underscoring just how personal and sensory a visit can be.
The “Shop Small Tampa” initiative is a testament to the city’s commitment to supporting local enterprises and fostering community spirit. By encouraging residents to support these businesses, Tampa not only boosts the economy but also strengthens communal ties, providing a distinct shopping experience this holiday season.
