The incident occurred while Portocarrero was performing his duties, ensuring safety during a private event near the art museum. He described the experience as if struck by a cannonball, later discovering that a 9mm hollow-tip bullet had penetrated his arm and lodged in his chest.
Despite the severity of his injury, Portocarrero spent less than a day in the hospital. However, he may require surgery for potential nerve damage in his arm, according to his sister, Rachel Parekh, who expressed concern from her home in California. Parekh remarked on her brother’s longstanding inclination toward security work, noting his stature often made him a target.
In response to the shooting, the Tampa Police Department requested public assistance in identifying the shooter. Parekh expressed a wish for the perpetrator to take responsibility, though she acknowledged the uncertainty of this occurring.
