Tesla, Inc. announces a voluntary recall of its highly anticipated Cybertruck following reports of a malfunction in the vehicle’s drive inverter, which poses an increased risk of a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has confirmed that at least 2,431 Cybertrucks produced between November 6, 2023 and July 30, 2024, may be affected by this issue.
The problem centers around the drive inverter, a critical component responsible for torque production in electric vehicles. In the event of a malfunction, drivers may experience a sudden loss of power to their wheels, leading to a potential loss of propulsion. This unexpected loss can increase the risk of a collision, according to the reports submitted to the NHTSA.
Tesla’s investigation into the drive inverter began earlier this summer, triggered by a customer complaint about a sudden loss of propulsion. In a news release, the company emphasized that drivers will not receive prior warning before experiencing a loss of torque, but they will see a visual alert on the truck’s user interface once propulsion is lost. This alert prompts the driver to pull over safely and contact roadside assistance.
CEO Elon Musk reiterated Tesla’s commitment to safety in light of the recall, stating, At Tesla, we prioritize the safety and satisfaction of our customers. We are taking immediate action to ensure that all affected Cybertruck owners are notified and that we address this issue with utmost urgency.
While no collisions, injuries, or fatal crashes have been reported as a result of this drive inverter malfunction, Tesla encourages all impacted owners to take necessary precautions and to reach out for assistance if needed. The company will provide a free replacement of the drive inverter for all owners affected by the recall. Notifications will be sent out by Tesla, with letters expected to reach owners by January detailing the recall and the steps for replacement.
This recall is Tesla’s sixth for the Cybertruck, which has become one of the most talked-about electric vehicles on the market since its launch less than a year ago. The Cybertruck has garnered widespread attention not only for its futuristic design and innovative technology but also for its unique features and capabilities. However, previous recalls have highlighted some challenges that Tesla faces as it ramps up production. In October, over 27,000 Cybertrucks were recalled due to a delay in the rearview camera affecting driver visibility. Additionally, in June, the company addressed issues with a sticky accelerator pedal, prompting another round of recalls.
As Tesla continues to adapt and improve its vehicle lineup, the company remains dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety for its customers. The NHTSA has recommended that all Cybertruck owners check if their vehicle is affected by this recent recall. Drivers can conveniently search for their vehicle identification number (VIN) on Tesla’s official website or through the NHTSA’s recall portal to confirm whether their Cybertruck is part of this recall effort.
For media inquiries or further information regarding this recall, KTVU has reached out to Tesla and is currently awaiting a formal statement. Tesla urges all affected owners to remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring the safety of their vehicles.
