A 20-year-old North Texas man has been formally charged with murder and aggravated kidnapping following the discovery of his mother’s body in Mansfield and a subsequent multi-state search that concluded with his arrest in Missouri. According to the Mansfield Police Department, Raymond Carmona was taken into custody on January 31 after fleeing the state with a 4-year-old child.
Law enforcement officials reported that the investigation began just before 9:00 a.m. on January 31, when officers were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Cotton Drive. A family member had discovered 63-year-old Andrea Colgrove unresponsive inside the home. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Colgrove dead at the scene. An autopsy conducted by the medical examiner later determined the cause of death to be a stab wound to the neck, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Investigators at the scene quickly established that Colgrove had legal guardianship of her 4-year-old grandson, who was missing from the residence along with a tan 2009 Toyota Corolla. Detectives identified the victim’s son, Raymond Carmona, as the primary suspect in both the homicide and the child’s disappearance. Based on investigative leads suggesting the suspect had traveled north, authorities contacted law enforcement in Missouri to request an Amber Alert.
According to police statements, shortly after the Amber Alert was issued and the vehicle was entered into the national stolen vehicle database, Missouri law enforcement located the Toyota Corolla. At approximately 2:40 p.m., troopers stopped the vehicle, recovering the child unharmed and taking Carmona into custody. The child was subsequently placed in the care of Child Protective Services.
Mansfield detectives traveled to Missouri to interview Carmona. Police allege that during questioning, Carmona admitted to his involvement in his mother’s death. He currently faces charges of murder, aggravated kidnapping, and theft of property involving a motor vehicle. It is important to note that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Interagency Coordination
This case highlights the critical functionality of the Amber Alert system in facilitating rapid cross-jurisdictional cooperation. The seamless communication between the Mansfield Police Department, the Missouri Highway Patrol, and the Arkansas Highway Patrol allowed for the expedited location of a high-risk suspect and the safe recovery of a minor across state lines. As the case proceeds, the focus will likely shift to the extradition process required to return the suspect to Texas to face the charges in Tarrant County.
