In a heartbreaking turn of events, a man was fatally shot on the back patio of his boyfriend’s home in Fort Lauderdale just after midnight on New Year’s Day, according to police reports.
Chris Dillon recounted the night to reporters, explaining that he hadn’t expected his boyfriend, Angel Nunes, to arrive just before midnight. “At 11:58, I hear [beeping, someone typing in] my door code, and only one [other] person knows that code,” Dillon said, recalling the moment when he realized Nunes was there, intending not to leave him alone for the New Year’s countdown.
Their joyous moment soon turned tragic. The couple went to the patio to share their first kiss of 2025 when a sudden flash interrupted their celebration. Dillon initially thought it was a firework that struck Nunes, but it was actually a bullet that had pierced his side, resulting in his untimely death.
Authorities in Fort Lauderdale are still trying to determine the origin of the bullet. One possible explanation is that it was a stray shot fired in celebration, a practice Dillon criticized, expressing confusion and anger over this dangerous tradition. “I don’t understand this cultural thing that you think it’s fun to shoot a gun up in the air,” he stated.
Dillon, who has experienced multiple losses, including that of a previous husband and a sister, described Nunes as kind and helpful. “[Angel] is perhaps the kindest person I’ve ever known,” Dillon said. Nunes was 50 and is survived by two adult daughters. His mother’s call came moments after he was shot, trying to wish him a Happy New Year.
