The trial for Ryan Routh, accused of attempting to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump in South Florida, has been postponed to September 8, 2025. This decision was reached after a federal judge ruled earlier this week to delay proceedings that were originally scheduled for February 10.
Routh, a 58-year-old resident of Hawaii, faces serious charges, including the attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, which could result in a life sentence if convicted. He has entered a plea of not guilty.
Defense attorneys for Routh requested the trial delay, citing the need for additional time to examine the extensive evidence, which includes hundreds of hours of police body camera footage and surveillance videos. The defense is also considering an insanity plea and mentioned that Routh possessed 17 cellphones and multiple other electronic devices.
Judge Aileen Cannon stated in her order that, given the gravity of the allegations, it was prudent to allow more preparation time. However, she deemed a delay until December excessive and settled on a September trial date, which she did not consider unreasonably long.
Prosecutors allege that Routh meticulously planned to assassinate Trump by aiming a rifle from shrubbery while Trump was playing golf on September 15, 2024, at his West Palm Beach country club. Before executing the plan, Routh was spotted by a Secret Service agent, whom he allegedly targeted with the rifle. The agent reportedly fired first, leading Routh to abandon his weapon and flee without firing a shot himself. A note left by Routh reportedly outlined his assassination intentions.
Routh was apprehended shortly after, driving on a nearby interstate, and is currently held without bail in a Miami federal jail. Additional charges against him include assaulting a federal officer and multiple firearms violations.
This incident came two months after Trump was injured in another assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally. Although the Secret Service acknowledged shortcomings in preventing that attack, they maintained that the security measures functioned effectively in preventing the Florida incident.
The delayed trial date aims to ensure comprehensive preparation for the serious charges faced by Ryan Routh. As the legal proceedings advance, this case continues to draw significant public and legal attention.
