Jim Larrañaga has announced his immediate departure as the head coach of the University of Miami men’s basketball team, concluding a prestigious 14-year tenure.
Larrañaga’s decision marks the end of a remarkable 41-year career in college basketball coaching, during which he achieved 744 wins across various institutions including Miami, American International, George Mason, and Bowling Green. Known for leading Miami to the Final Four in 2023 and George Mason in 2006, Larrañaga has left a significant impact on college basketball.
The 75-year-old will be succeeded by associate head coach Bill Courtney for the remainder of the season. Courtney has been a close friend of Larrañaga’s for over three decades, ensuring a continuation of the values and strategies that Larrañaga instilled in the team.
Miami’s current season performance under Larrañaga includes a 4-8 record, amidst a challenging phase due to injuries and roster changes. The team’s drop from the heights of competing in the Final Four two years ago to recent struggles has been noteworthy.
Larrañaga’s decision comes amid ongoing discussions in college sports regarding the effects of the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policy, which he has criticized for its lack of regulation and transparency. This has been a concern for many coaches, including Tony Bennett, who also stepped down from Virginia earlier this season citing similar issues.
While Larrañaga was contracted through 2027, recent efforts by school officials to persuade him to reconsider his resignation were unsuccessful. His departure follows a trend of veteran coaches leaving the Atlantic Coast Conference, as seen with Tony Bennett, Roy Williams, Mike Krzyzewski, and Jim Boeheim in recent years.
Larrañaga’s journey in coaching began in 1977, with a unique start during his high school years when he unexpectedly became a student coach. His career includes coaching players who later joined the NBA, making 20 postseason appearances, and earning titles such as the AP national coach of the year in 2013. Recently, he was nominated for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, adding to his lasting legacy.
Jim Larrañaga’s departure signifies the end of an era for Miami basketball, as well as the broader college basketball landscape. As the coaching baton passes to Bill Courtney, the future of the team remains hopeful amidst ongoing challenges in the sport.
