NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio – An 18-year-old man wanted by the Akron Police Department for the theft of firearms was arrested in New Philadelphia on November 14 by federal authorities. Derquan Edwards was taken into custody by the United States Marshals Service (USMS) and the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Taskforce.
The arrest took place without incident in the 300 block of Ray Avenue, where the USMS executed the warrant. Officials with the Marshals Service indicated that Edwards was expected to be transported to the Summit County Jail.
In a separate announcement, the New Philadelphia Police Department and Police Chief Tessa Pohovey confirmed the arrest. The department noted that, as an “abundance of caution,” school resource officers were positioned at the nearby East and Central elementary schools during the operation due to their proximity to the location.
The charge against Mr. Edwards is an accusation. It is important to note that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
