In a distressing incident this Thanksgiving, a four-year-old girl was attacked by a coyote in northern Colorado Springs, mistaking the predator for a dog. The attack left her with significant injuries, necessitating immediate hospitalization.
The young child, in the company of another child, approached the coyote, which was initially perceived as a harmless dog crouching behind a tree. Without warning, the animal lunged at her, targeting the back of her head and inflicting serious injuries. This attack prompted a swift response from her father, who intervened to scare off the coyote and halt the assault, as described by Tim Kroening, a wildlife manager with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).
Following the incident, which occurred approximately an hour’s drive south of Denver, CPW officials were informed and promptly began organizing a search to locate the coyote responsible for the attack. Plans to eliminate any coyote found in the vicinity have been put in motion, with subsequent examinations of the carcasses for human DNA and diseases such as rabies.
Coyotes, known for their adaptability to urban areas, often seek shelter and easy access to food in these environments. In their natural diet, they consume small animals, berries, and scraps. However, experts note that these animals may become aggressive under certain circumstances, such as when defending their young, when ill, or when humans feed them, which is illegal and problematic in urban spaces.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of preventing coyotes from becoming comfortable around humans. Recommendations include refraining from leaving pet food outside and deterring the animals by yelling or throwing rocks. “People nearby might be leaving pet food outdoors or actively feeding by throwing them scraps of food. That’s illegal and it’s a problem in urban areas,” Kroening remarked.
The search for the coyote continues and is expected to extend over several days. Meanwhile, this incident serves as a poignant reminder of the potential dangers of wildlife interactions in urban settings and the necessity for residents to remain vigilant.
