Authorities have disclosed the causes of death for renowned actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, following the discovery of their bodies in their New Mexico residence.
The medical examination revealed that Betsy Arakawa succumbed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. This severe respiratory virus is typically contracted through contact with the excrement of infected rodents, as confirmed by Dr. Heather Jarrell, chief medical examiner at New Mexico’s Office of the Medical Investigator. It is believed that Arakawa likely passed away on February 11, the date of her last recorded communication.
Gene Hackman’s cause of death was identified as hypertensive cardiovascular disease, significantly impacted by Alzheimer’s disease, according to Dr. Jarrell. His autopsy showed no signs of hantavirus infection. Officials estimate Hackman died around February 18, corroborated by the last recorded activity of his pacemaker, which registered an abnormal rhythm of atrial fibrillation on that day.
Both Hackman and Arakawa were confirmed to be free of carbon monoxide poisoning, and no trauma—internal or external—was found on their bodies. Their deaths raised questions due to the suspicious circumstances in which they were found door ajar and an open prescription pill bottle nearby, albeit without any indication that the medication contributed to Arakawa’s death.
The bodies of Hackman, Arakawa, and their dog were discovered by maintenance workers on February 26. Arakawa was found in the bathroom, Hackman in the mudroom, and their dog, believed to be an Australian kelpie mix named Zinna, was located in a closet within the bathroom. Two other dogs were found unharmed on the property. Zinna’s necropsy results are still pending, although it is noted that dogs are not typically susceptible to hantavirus as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza, who addressed the media regarding the couple’s deaths, shared that the investigation considered but largely dismissed the possibility of foul play. Mendoza reiterated the couple might have been deceased for weeks prior to their discovery. Hackman’s family expressed their sorrow, highlighting the personal loss amidst global admiration for his contributions to the arts.
The release of Gene Hackman’s and Betsy Arakawa’s causes of death provides clarity amidst the tragedy, though questions remain. Their deaths underscore the unpredictable nature of such health challenges, reminding the public of the fragility of life. Meanwhile, their contributions, particularly Hackman’s cinematic legacy, continue to be celebrated by fans and loved ones alike.
